The Seas of the Mesozoic

from the Dinosaur Collector

Plesiosaurus (Near Lizard) was 7 - 8 feet long and characterized the Mesozoic period. It had an almost world-wide distribution.  The term plesiosaur is sometimes applied more generally to all members of the family including the short necked big headed pliosasurs   Plesiosaurus fed on belemnites, ammonites, fish and other prey. They had a unique style of swimming. The front and back flippers alternating their strokes. There is no modern analogue. This is different from the way sea turtles swim.

The long necked design is unlikely to have made a fast swimmer. The long neck must have a speicalised advantage. Perhaps it was easier to ambush fish and cephlapods.
