Plesiosaurus (Near Lizard) was 7 - 8 feet long and characterized the Mesozoic period. It had an almost world-wide distribution. The term plesiosaur is sometimes applied more generally to all members of the family including the short necked big headed pliosasurs | Plesiosaurus fed on belemnites, ammonites, fish and other prey. They had a unique style of swimming. The front and back flippers alternating their strokes. There is no modern analogue. This is different from the way sea turtles swim. | |

The long necked design is unlikely to have made a fast swimmer. The long neck must have a speicalised advantage. Perhaps it was easier to ambush fish and cephlapods. |
