The term plesiosaur is sometimes applied more generally to all members of the family including the short necked big headed pliosasurs. There were traditinally dived into two major groups.  The long necked small headed plesiosaurs that ate smaller sea creatures.  The pliosaurs have large heads short necks and ate what ever they wanted. The relationships are now thought to be more complex. The two forms may represent to body plans each specialised for a specific niche that was filled by different plesiosaur families over time. Some long necked speices seem to be more closely related to the plisoaurs. The true ichthyosaurs that survie the Triassic extinction diversify into serveral new families.
