MIDDLE JURASSIC

Middle Jurassic

Middle Jurassic period is relatively unknown. 

In the Middle Jurassic cycadoids start to become less common, conifers get much bigger and cycads are more prominent and the climate gets wetter as Pangaea starts to break up. Sauropods become the large herbivore in the Middle Jurassic. There are few good Middle Jurassic formations so our knowledge of this transitional period is very limited. 

Laurasia

North America has no Middle Jurassic sites.

Europe, England, France, Portugal produced fossils of basal types that ancestral to later major families.

Bathonian, we see sauropods, stegosaurs and carnosaurs.

Callovian, the final period of the Middle Jurassic is the .

Asia

China has produced two of the most diverse Middle Jurassic faunas in the world.  China was isolated producing distinct dinosaurs.

Gondwanaland

Africa 

Niger Tiouraren Formation non neosauropods andlarge carnosaurs.

South America, Argentina has recently produced some major sites that should throw light on the changes in the Middle Jurassic.
