Middle Jurassic
Callovian Europe
The final period of the Middle Jurassic is the Callovian. The selection of dinosaurs picks up. In the Callovian the finds include the theropod Eustreptospondylus, sauropods (Cetiosauriscus and Ornithopsis), stegosaur Lexovisaurus, and the ornithopod Callovosaurus

Lexovisaurus probably had fairly narrow, short plates (22) on neck and back, and spines (12) on tail. A pair of very long spines (1.2m/4 ft - the longest of any stegosaur) were originally thought to have jutted from the hips, but have now been shown, as with all other stegosaurs as well, to have been on the shoulders. It could run as fast as a galloping rhinoceros to avoid danger.
Callovosaurus (callovian reptile) is known from a leg bone discovered in England. It is the earliest known member of the iguanodont family, members of which walked on their hind legs but descended to all fours when feeding. The small anmial estimated at 11 ft. is known from very limited fossil material..
The theropod Eustreptospondylus is known from a skeleton found in a maritime matrix in England. It was about 13 feet long. This theropod may have had a head like Allosaurus. It has the best preserved remains of any European theropod. Its thick walled leg bones helped to support the bulky body, and large openings in the skull reduced its weight, while the small, weak arms had sharp-clawed hands.
