Safari Ltd ankylosaurs

Carnegie Safari 1/40 scale Ankylosaurus is based on Ken Carpenters recent work is now on the shelves.  I felt very nostalgic seeing it.  Ankylosaurus was a stalwart of the Marx figures on my youth.  The reconstruction weren’t very good because the type specimen finds were fragmentary.  Most reconstructions used the better known Euplocephalus to fill in the missing pieces.  Eventually Euplocephalus, an earlier smaller relative became the standard armored dinosaur in most of the American museum lines.  The Carnegie, Play Vision and Battat lines picked EuplocephalusSchleich and Kaiyodo on the other hand picked the Asian ankyelosaur Saichania.  The museums were not comfortable using the original material to make an accurate reconstruction. The exception was the Walking with Dinosaur figure which is an original if very speculative reconstruction.  The Carnegie Safari Euplocephalus was retired because of mold fatigue years ago. Most of the remaining figures don’t do the original figure justice as the details became dulled with over use.  When you put them together you can see the relationship and can picture what Euplocephalus looked like when first released.
