Walking with Dinosaurs

 in the Jurassic

from the Dinosaur Collector

Page 6 UPDATED 8/01/06

Walking with Dinosaurs (WWD) by BBC was the best dinosaur production to date.  The Jurassic segment set in North America featured Diplodocus, Stegosaurus, Dryosaurus, Ornitholestes, Allosaurus and Ceratosaurus.   Diplodocus had the staring role.  As we track the life of a female from egg to adult.

Recent find have been made indicating some sauropods had fleshy extensions along the back and shoulders.  The WWD creators added this to their Diplodocus.  Ceratosaurus has a brief part prior to being eaten by Allosaurus.

My favorite TS Toys figure the Diplodocus and a Kaiyodo Dino Tales version 4 Ceratosaurus.  Nobody seems to want to do the WWD Ceratosaurus.

Stegosaurus has major role in the documentary as the largest of the ornithiscians in a world dominated by sauropods.

Allosaurus was the costar, Big Al does so well he gets a spin off documentary of his own.  The BBC reproductions were very accurate if a little conservative probably representing the European point of view.  One noticeable error was the placement of Big Al's lachrymal horns.  They should be set in front of the eye rather than over.

Brachiosaurus was the heavy weight  of the family.  Built for high browsing it feed at a higher level than its relatives.  Less common than the diplodocids but its descendants lingered on into the Early Cretaceous.

A JASMAN Brachiosaurus from the large diorama set.  The hypsilophodont is from the Toyway Walking with Dinosaur figures.

Small plant are present but fossils are not common.  Just why this is so is not clear.  It could be preservation favored large animals over smaller dinosaurs.  Hypsilophodonts are normally only found in habitats where fossils of larger dinosaurs are not found.  Dryosaurus was found in North America and Africa so it was wide spread but not common.  Unspecialized animals will usually have larger ranges but lower densities than more specialized animals.
